This painting depicts FREER’s Day 5 tribute to a fallen friend, Ernesto Vera, a.k.a. Ernie. This piece appears on the endpages of Ecco’s U.S. hardcover edition of All Involved: A Novel of the 1992 L.A. Riots. It is by Evan Skrederstu (with Steve Martinez) of UGLARworks. The intersection shown in the piece is Norton & Martin Luther King in the City of Lynwood, part of South Central Los Angeles.
Being able to work closely with Evan on concept was definitely one of the most rewarding aspects of this project. Adapting from the page into a visual form is not always easy, but this went about as well as it possibly could have gone. After an initial brainstorming session, I picked this moment: FREER’s masterpiece tribute on the bus just seconds after he has left the scene.
Steve Martinez & I did some scouting in Lynwood, in particular taking reference photos & framing the street the way the piece would ultimately be framed. Evan did background research on which buildings were where in 1992, and this is the result: an iconic image that captures the spirit of the novel.
